Shopping Green Everyday
When it comes to evaluating and choosing green products and determining those that cause minimal impact on the environment- here are some basic guidelines you should consider:
- Consider the packaging. Look for products packaged in Bermuda’s recyclable materials such as glass or aluminum. Don’t buy products that are excessively packaged or wrapped. Look for products in reusable containers, or for which concentrated refills may be purchased. Avoid buying anything packaged in Styrofoam.
- Go natural. Choose products that do not contain bleaches, dyes, or CFC’s. Paper, diapers and fabrics in an unbleached state are merely off-white and just as functional. Organic food is derived from farm management practices that replenish and maintain soil fertility without the use of destructive pesticides. Nontoxic household cleaners don’t mean extra scrubbing- there are many alternative “green” cleaners that are effective but not so hazardous. Phosphates in detergents are particularly corrosive.
- Bring your own bag. Carry your products home in paper, not plastic, bags. Better yet, bring your own reusable cloth bag.
- Dispose of hazardous waste properly. Dispose of toxic substances such as batteries and paint cans at the appropriate facilities (i.e. Tyne’s Bay drop-off).
- Reduce paper. Don’t print it if you don’t need it, and recycle paper by turning it over and printing on the other side when you’re done with a document.
- Don’t buy disposables. Disposable razors, diapers, lighters, cameras, cups and plates are a waste of resources and money. Buy rechargeable batteries and other reusable products instead.
- Buy in bulk. Whenever practical, purchase larger packages. You’ll save money and avoid excess containers. Especially avoid “convenience” package- single-serving meals, for example- which are over packaged and expensive.
- Don’t use as much. Whether doing the laundry, washing your hair, or scrubbing the dishes, it is almost certain that you are using far more detergent than is necessary to do the job.
- Grow your own. Indoor plants clean your air and beautify your environment, and outdoor gardens can provide food and herbs for your table at a fraction of the cost. It’s a wonderful leisure activity for you and your family.
- Buy “green gifts”. Instead of a dust collector for an already crowded mantle, consider gifts that support environmental organizations and make a difference. You can adopt an acre of rainforest, an endangered animal, or sponsor a child in a third world country all in the name of your loved one.
